Job Role

We are looking for a Caretaker / Maintenance Engineer to join our Property Team in Guernsey.

The purpose of the role is to ensure that all store facilities and equipment are in good working order, addressing any repair and maintenance issues quickly and efficiently. Working across multiple store locations, ensuring high standards of safety, cleanliness and functionality are maintained, contributing to an excellent customer experience and a safe working environment.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Maintenance & Repairs:

• Perform routine and preventive maintenance tasks, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and general repairs.
• Attend store callouts as a first-responder, liaise with store manager / duty manager and assess need for further support.
• Fix minor issues such as leaking taps, faulty lighting, broken shelves, or damaged doors across all stores.
• Coordinate larger repair works with external contractors when required, ensuring minimal disruption to store operations.

Store Upkeep:

• Carry out minor painting, decorating, and refurbishment works as needed.
• Perform regular inspections of store facilities to identify maintenance needs, potential hazards, or improvements required.

Equipment & Fixtures:

• Maintain store fixtures, fittings, and equipment, ensuring everything is in good working order.
• Troubleshoot equipment breakdowns and conduct simple repairs where possible, liaising with technical specialists when necessary.

Health & Safety Compliance:

• Ensure all maintenance work complies with health and safety regulations and company policies.
• Conduct safety checks, including fire alarm testing, emergency lighting inspections, and monitoring safety equipment.
• Report hazards or unsafe conditions and take appropriate steps to rectify them promptly.

General Support:

• Assist with store relocations, opening new stores, or refurbishments, including setting up equipment, moving furniture, or assembling displays.
• Work with store managers, duty managers and supervisory staff to address urgent maintenance issues that impact daily store operations.
• Support with pest control management in line with the company’s food hygiene standards.

MEASURES OF PERFORMANCE

• All reviews and learning sessions completed and ensure that the Senior Property Manager is satisfied with progress.
• Plan to aid completion of project within timescale.
• Projects completed within timescales and quality of work verified by relevant Manager.
• Customer satisfaction.
• Cost savings achieved through work completed
• Compliance with legal requirements

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• A proven record of a high level of attendance at work; honest; able to work effectively with little supervision; polite and courteous to members of the public; calm and patient when under pressure; co-operative with other employees, parents and visitors.
• Proven experience in a similar caretaker / maintenance engineer role, preferably (but not essential) within either a retail or multi-site environments.
• Strong practical skills in general maintenance tasks such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, painting, and minor repairs.

KNOWLEDGE

• Knowledge of health and safety regulations and maintenance best practices.
• Familiarity with basic tools and equipment required for common repair tasks.

SKILLS

• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks efficiently.
• Good communication skills, capable of liaising with store staff, managers, and external contractors.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to travel between store locations.
• Flexibility in working hours, as occasional out-of-hours or weekend work may be required for emergency repairs or store openings.
