Media release: closure of post office in Market Street store
CI COOP and Guernsey Post have announced the post office within COOP's Market Street store will close on Friday 12th April 2024.
Mark Cox, CEO of CI COOP, said, “As a Society, we take immense pride in supporting our communities and have always recognised the vital role post offices play within local areas. We have discussed various options with Guernsey Post and, have come to the joint decision to close Market Street Post Office.”
CI COOP are pleased to confirm that they have been able to offer alternate roles to all colleagues elsewhere in the business, avoiding any job losses.
Boley Smillie, CEO of Guernsey Post, said “It is essential that we retain a Post Office in town for the benefit of our local community. Because our arrangement with CI COOP in Market Street is ending, we are going to relocate, extend and improve our retail counter within the Tourist Information building, which will provide the full suite of postal services.”
Guernsey Post advised its EBOX Parcel Collection service at Market Street would also cease on 12th April, but its PO Boxes at Market Street would remain there temporarily while an alternative solution is sourced. It said it would contact affected customers directly.
CI COOP remains dedicated to providing postal services for communities in Guernsey and will keep its post offices in its St Sampson and St Martin stores open, albeit with reduced opening hours of 9am - 3pm Monday - Friday and 9am – 12pm Saturday, effective from 15 April.
Mr Smillie added “We’d like to thank the CI COOP for running the Market Street Post Office for the last 3 years and we will of course continue to work closely with them in the running of the Post Offices at St Sampson and St Martin.”
